If you are like some, you probably have a lot of WAD and PK3 files that are taking up a lot of space on your hard disk or solid state drive.

In this small tutorial, I will show you how you can compress the files and be able to gain more space on your drive.

So lets get started!

  • Windows 2000, Windows XP, Windows Vista, Windows 7 only

Compressing

You will need to locate your Skulltag directory; if you used the Skulltag Installer, than Skulltag will be located at ( C:\Program Files\Skulltag ), after you found your Skulltag Directory, you can either select all of the WAD/PK3 files, or you can select the Skulltag folder itself.

Right click on the files you want to compress, and select properties.

After you have pressed OK, Windows will begin compressing the selected files/folders. This can take time, depending on your computer speed, how large the files are, and how many files Windows is compressing…

Once Windows has finished updating the files, you will see a noticeable change on the file size,

This means that only 3.69 Gigabytes are used on the disk, and not the original size of 4.88 Gigabytes. In this compressing method, you can still be able to use the compressed files as you would if it was not compressed. So doing this type of compression, you can be able to free up more space on your hard disk, and still be able to play your games!

Uncompressing

To uncompress the files, just follow the same steps as mentioned, however when you get to “Advanced Attributes” unselect “Compress contents to save disk space”, than continue on through out the steps.
