Setting up your new server!
You might think that with all of these settings that are right in front of you are going to be over-whelming, however it is not! Lets get started on creating a small, simple, and basic server.
The first thing you want to-do is give your server a name, so lets call this server “My first Doom 2 Server!”. Now, for the Message Of The Day (MOTD), lets say “Welcome to my server, enjoy your stay!” when a player connects to your server. Lets skip a few lines, and change the Gametype to Cooperative. Now, if you look at FragLimit, lets change that 50 to 0. Since this is Cooperative, Frags will not be in question. If you were to also look at Team Setup, on PointLimit, you will see a 5, again lets change that to 0 as well. You would use the PointLimit for Capture The Flag, or Skull Tag. Okay now to DMFlags, now to do some heavy thinking on what you game play you want on your server. Select what you want in your game play, and take your time looking through the list. Once you have finished customizing your DMFlags, now for the final step. Selecting to make the server Private, or show on your LAN.
- LAN: You need to be behind a Router, or in a workgroup network.
- Private: The server will NOT be viewable to anyone besides you.
Lets say, you want people to join your server and you are behind a Router, that your friends are also connected to, you would select (LAN Server). Doing this will allow your server to broadcast on your LAN as well as allowing other players to connect to your server!
Here is an example of a basic Server setup:
Once you are finished setting it up, lets Start your server by pressing (START Server)!
Finding your Server
In most cases, once you have successfully started your server, your server will be shown on the IDESE Server List. However, if you set your server to Private or LAN Server, you will need to do a few extra things.
Finding your LAN Server
This is one of the most easiest things to setup. On the Internet Doom Explorer Skulltag Edition (IDESE), go to the “Options” tap, and select “Enable Automatic LAN Servers search”. Once you have selected this, go to the “Servers” tap, and find your server. You will recognize an ICON difference among other Skulltag Servers. Here is the ICON that you see:
Finding your Private Server
Finding a Private server is also easy, however you have just 2 small extra steps to-do. On the Internet Doom Explorer Skulltag Edition (IDESE), go to the “Options” tap, and on the left, click on “Custom Servers”. Now, lets add a new custom server. When you click on (Add), you will see a new small window, asking for the Address and Comment. Now, since this is a Private server, lets press the (Localhost) button on that small window. This will automatically add an address and port for you, now you just have to add a comment, lets put this as a comment (My Local Server). Once you have done this, press (Ok), and on the Custom Servers, click on (Reply). Now your server will be shown on the IDESE Servers tap.
Not able to find your server?
Sometimes when you are behind a Router, or have some Internet Security on your computer, you might have to perform some extra task that will allow your server to be seen on the Server List.
Unfortunately, I can’t completely help you with this step by step, so on this region you are on your own. However I’ll list some generalized and the most common issues.
Do each step by one, if the one does not work, then try the next.
- If your router and computer supports UPnP "Universal Plug and Play", then try this tutorial.
- Temporarily disabling your Internet Security Software.
- Add Skulltag.exe as an exception rule on the Windows Firewall (Manual Installers Only!)
- Add Skulltag.exe as an exception to your Internet Security software (Firewall, Anti-virus, Connection Monitors, etc)
- Disable Internet Security Connection Protocols
If all fails; please let us know on the Forums what your issue is, or tell us on IRC!
