Using IDESE (The Basics)

Internet Doom Explorer (SkullTag Edition) or IDESE, is no longer supported, and
has been replaced with DoomSeeker.

What is IDESE?

IDESE is short for “Internet Doom Explorer (Skulltag Edition)”, which allows you the flexibility to join an online game with very little to no human interaction! This small lightweight program also has some neat features; notifying you when your buddy is playing, and Starting your own Personal Server.

Lets get started!

You will see several taps

Lets focus on the Servers Tap.

The Server tap is the first tap open every time you open IDESE, so you can quickly join a server without having to navigate through the program.

Understanding the Layout

On the top you will see several Letter Icons:

L - Launch the selected/highlighted server

RA - Refresh All Servers

RC - Refresh Current Server

AA - AutoRefresh All Servers

? – Help

Now, if you look at the Server List, you will see the Skulltag Icon on the very left side, however their are two kinds of icons:

Image:SKULLOFFEN.PNG - This icon means that there is no password to join this server.

Image:SKULLKey.PNG - This icon means that you will need a password to either connect and/or join.

The Player Icons

Image:IDESE Player.PNG - a dark green player icon means that the player is Human and playing.

Image:IDESE Spect.PNG - A yellow player icon means that the player is Human and spectating.

Image:IDESE BOT.PNG - A cyan player icon means that the player is a Bot and playing/Spectating.

Image:IDESE_Frei.PNG - A free spot is available to play on the server.

Image:IDESE_Frei_Spect.PNG - A free spot is available to spectate on the server.

Ping Icon

The ping icon is easy to understand, once you know how to read them. There is four ping icons.

Image:IDESE_Gruen.PNG - You have an excellent ping to this server

Image:IDESE_Gelb.PNG - You have an average ping to this server (Mild lag)

Image:IDESE_Rott.PNG - You have a heavy ping to this server (Expect lag!)

Image:IDESE_KeinSV.PNG - The server is no longer in service.

Ping-Current and Ping-Average

If you don't understand what a Ping is, it is part of the TCP/IP Protocol that measures the time of how long it takes to receive a packet from another node, and for that node to send back a ping acknowledgement along with the time information. Still don't understand? No problem. Take this as an example of a ping. You throw a ball at someone that is a 900 Centimeters away from you, he throws the ball back at you, and you received the ball no more than a few seconds. (This is a good ping)

Now, you throw a ball at someone that is 500 Kilometers away from you, when he finally receives it, he throws the ball back at you, and you wait till that ball finally comes to you. Once you have finally received the ball, you note that it took several moments for the ball to get to one place and back to another. (This is a bad ping).

You can use the Ping Icon to help you on what Ping is good and what Ping is bad.

Server Reliability

You might see a lot of ( 100 % ) by the server, this means that the server is responding and not heavily loaded. If a server misses a ping, or massive downtime, you will see the Server Reliability measure down.

Server Name

You will see either a LAN Icon meaning that the server is shown on your LAN, or you will see a Country flag, of where that server is being hosted. You will also see the Server's name.

Address - The IP Address to that server, along with the Port ID.

Map - The current map that the server is currently in.

Wad - The PWAD's that are currently being hosted on that server.

Game Type - The game mode that is being played on that server.

Game Modifier - The Game Modifier show as an icon on the Gametype category.

Getting a WAD from the web

Some Servers host files that are downloadable on FileFront, RapidShare, and many others. This method is fine, however GetWAD will not be able to download the files for the users. So the only way to download the proper files is to do it manually. When you highlight the server, make sure that the (WADURL) has a link to the download site, otherwise; you will need to input it manually on your Internet Explorer. If the WADURL has a download link, on your IDESE program, press ( W ). This will automatically open your Internet Explorer to the exact download URL. All you need to do is follow the rest of the steps that are needed to download that wad file.

Organizing Your Server List

If you want to change the way IDESE puts players, and want them on the top of the list; so you know what server is busy, or want to sort through the game modes; simply click on the top arrow.

And now, when that Player plays on any server, IDESE will notify you. If you want to change the Notify sound, you can simply click on "Customize" to change the notify sound to one of your WAV sound files.

Making the Country Flags nicer

You might have said this “We do the country flag icons look so dull?” Well, there is a way to make them look nicer. On the Options, click on IP-To-Country, on the Flag Style option, we are going to change it from Flat to 3D. Now, go back to the Servers, and enjoy the nice and less dull flags!
