Automatic Installation on Ubuntu and Variants

Note: there is a script that will do the following automatically and also compile and install Doomseeker from SVN. See Skulltag Autoinstall Script

This tutorial was originally made by Blzut, and can be found here.

WARNING: This method of installation is only available for 32-bit users.
If you installed Ubuntu through Wubi and you have an Intel Core 2, Intel i7 or
AMD 64 processor you probably have the 64-bit edition of Linux installed.
Although not impossible, it is difficult to install Skulltag under 64-bit Linux.
You will have to wait until 97e in order to get 64-bit support at which time
packages will be available.

Automatic Installation on Ubuntu 8.10/9.04 and Variants

Installing Skulltag on Ubuntu Linux is quite and easy task. Particularly now since we introduced the ability to install it from the package manager. Installing from the package manager poses many advantages, namely automatic updates (provided you update or system regularly).

To note, I will be conducting this tutorial from Kubuntu since that is all I have installed. It is possible to use these packages on Ubuntu, Xubuntu, etc, but you will need to find the proper dialogs yourself (shouldn't be too hard).

First open your package manger. Under Kubuntu this is Applications->System->Package Manger (Adept). From there switch to the sources panel and click "Edit Software Sources".

This should bring up a "Software Sources" dialog. Switch to the "Third-Party Software" tab and click the "Add..." button.

The "Add APT Repository" dialog should come up. In the box enter, without the quotes, "deb http://skulltag.com/testing/public/deb/ intrepid multiverse" and click "OK" and then "Close" on the previous, "Software Sources", dialog. A repository for jaunty is available by replacing intrepid with jaunty.

At this point Adept will scan the repository and index the packages available. Switch to the "Search" panel and type "skulltag" into the search box (sans the quotes). If nothing shows up close Adept and wait a few minutes (I think it takes a little bit for the indexing to occur). Once the Skulltag packages show up select the "skulltag" package and check "Install this package".

Switch to the "Changes" panel and click "Apply Changes".

Once that is done Skulltag is installed, but there's still a few things to do. Open up a terminal and type "skulltag" (again no quotes) and press enter. It will inform you about being unable to locate your iwads. This is a necessary step do not skip it.

Now open up your file browser and go to "~/.skulltag/" (by now you should be automatically assuming no quotes). You will find your skulltag.ini here, but the reason we are here is this is where you need to put your iwads, so copy them into there.

Once that is done go to your applications menu and you should find Skulltag under games.

Common questions:

  • Q. How do I browse servers? The internal browser sucks and doesn't load mods automatically.
  • A. Install the package "doomseeker-skulltag".
