Spider Mastermind
The spider-chassis boss demon and final boss of Doom (1993), described in the game's end text as the mastermind of Hell's invasion of the moon bases.
The spiderdemon — called the spider mastermind in the Ultimate Doom, Doom II and Final Doom manuals and in Doom II’s cast sequence — is the final boss of Doom (1993) and of Thy Flesh Consumed: a huge brain on a four-legged cybernetic chassis with a super chaingun.

Every pellet and every hit lands; no infighting. Min = every damage roll at its maximum, Max = every roll at its minimum, Typical = at the average damage of Doom’s fixed random table (the true expected count can differ by a shot). Time = first hit to last at full fire rate, typical shots, projectile travel not included. For the two shotguns Min and Max are formula bounds the fixed table cannot fully reach: a super shotgun blast with every pellet on one monster lands about 170–245, never 100 or 300.
Rocket = direct hit + 103–117 blast (a rocket detonates one step short of its target; the Cyberdemon and Spider Mastermind take no blast). BFG 9000 = ball impact only (100–800); each of its 40 tracers adds 49–87 to whatever it hits, so against a big monster at close range the real count is lower. Fist (Berserk) = ×10. Chaingun and Chainsaw count single bullets and teeth; the chaingun always fires in pairs, so an odd count spends one bullet more.

The spiderdemon is one of the recurring boss enemies in the Doom franchise. First encountered at the end of Doom’s third episode and again in Thy Flesh Consumed, it also appears in Doom II and both Final Doom campaigns before returning under the name spider mastermind in later games, including Doom II RPG and Doom (2016).
Origins and role in classic Doom
In Doom (1993), the spiderdemon is the final boss of the episode Inferno, appearing in E3M8: Dis. It is also the final boss of Thy Flesh Consumed, in E4M8: Unto the Cruel. The original game’s end text describes it as the “loathsome spiderdemon that masterminded the invasion of the moon bases.” This is the game’s wording; the name spider mastermind is used in later manuals and in Doom II’s cast sequence.
Visually, the creature presents a grotesque fusion of organic and mechanical components. An enormous, exposed brain dominates its form, mounted atop a large mechanical spider chassis armed with a rapid-fire chain gun. Its weapon is commonly called a super chaingun; its attack uses the same firing code as the shotgun guy’s shotgun, firing three pellets per shot at approximately 466.7 shots per minute. It continues firing until its target leaves its field of view or the spiderdemon is stunned.
The Doom II manual explicitly connects the arachnotron to the spider mastermind, joking:
“You guess the arachnotrons had to come from somewhere. Hi, mom. She doesn’t have a plasma gun, so thank heaven for small favors. Instead, she has a super-chaingun. Crap.”
Boss behavior and combat encounter design
As a hitscan enemy of considerable size, the spider mastermind creates a distinctive challenge compared to projectile-based bosses like the cyberdemon. Because it fires a continuous burst of bullets rather than telegraphed rockets, encounters demand constant lateral movement and the use of available geometry to break line of sight. Open flat arenas — the type frequently used for boss rooms — tend to favor the monster, while environments with pillars, barriers, or elevation changes shift the dynamic toward the player.
The spiderdemon can retaliate against other monsters that damage it, including the cyberdemon. In Doom II’s MAP20: Gotcha!, the two bosses can fight each other, and the cyberdemon usually wins. Arachnotrons can also stun-lock the spiderdemon, making it very likely that they will kill it if they keep attacking.
Like the cyberdemon, the spiderdemon is immune to blast damage, so rockets can damage it only through direct hits rather than their explosions; the BFG9000’s ray damage, however, can still hurt it.
Tactics: how to defeat the spider mastermind
- Keep moving laterally while crossing exposed areas. The spiderdemon’s super chaingun is a hitscan attack, so it does not travel toward you like a projectile; moving continuously and breaking line of sight behind pillars or walls are more useful than trying to dodge individual bullets.
- Use the arena’s pillars and other solid geometry to interrupt its line of sight. In E3M8: Dis, the central circular room has thin pillars that can provide brief protection from its fire; move between them rather than staying exposed.
- Use monster infighting when other enemies are present. In E3M8, you can maneuver so that a cacodemon or another monster is between you and the spiderdemon, encouraging its shots to hit the other monster; let the enemies damage each other while you attack from a safer position or collect ammunition.
- Save the BFG9000 for the boss when you have one available. The BFG9000 is an effective way to finish the spiderdemon, and E3M8: Dis contains limited ammunition and no health pickups, so plan your weapon and ammunition use around the encounter.
- Use the plasma gun from a position that lets you keep moving and reach cover. E3M8: Dis places a plasma gun in the small central room; its rapid fire lets you deal damage while moving, but the room’s pillars provide only limited protection from the spiderdemon’s hitscan attack.
- If the spiderdemon and cyberdemon are both present, try to trigger infighting instead of trading fire with both. In MAP20: Gotcha!, the cyberdemon usually wins a fight against the spider mastermind, so drawing the spiderdemon’s fire onto it can reduce the amount of damage you need to deal yourself.
- Exploit the raised ledge in E3M8: Dis to avoid the spiderdemon’s aimed fire. Stand on the ledge at a great distance from the spiderdemon: from there its attack does not aim at you, and it is tall enough that your projectiles still reach it.
- Fire the BFG9000 at point-blank range when you can safely approach. The spiderdemon’s large body can intercept most of the BFG’s tracer rays, concentrating damage; this can kill it in one or two shots, depending on the shot and game conditions.
Appearances across the franchise
Beyond the classic id Software titles, the spider mastermind has appeared in multiple entries across the Doom franchise. The spiderdemon appears as a boss in Doom II RPG under the name spider mastermind.
In Doom (2016), the spider mastermind is the final boss, formed from Olivia Pierce’s body in union with the Lord of the Fourth Age of Hell. The demons grant Olivia this form after she opens the portal to Hell. The game’s lore also includes a UAC report hinting at a “mastermind” behind events, while leaving open whether Olivia had any control over the entity associated with her transformation.
Relationship to the arachnotron
The arachnotron, introduced in Doom II: Hell on Earth, is explicitly linked to the spider mastermind in the Doom II manual, which refers to the arachnotrons as its offspring. The two enemies form a visual and thematic family: the arachnotron handles mid-tier encounters while the spider mastermind looms as the apex of that design lineage. In Doom II RPG, a defeated spider mastermind also breaks apart into three arachnotrons — a detail that connects it narratively to the arachnotron enemy type, which shares the spider chassis aesthetic at a smaller scale.
The name: spiderdemon vs. spider mastermind
The creature’s name differs across the classic Doom games. The original Doom (1993) end text calls it the “spiderdemon,” while Doom II introduces the name “the spider mastermind” in its cast sequence and manual. The Ultimate Doom also uses the name in the end text for Thy Flesh Consumed, which begins, “the spider mastermind must have sent forth its legions of hellspawn.” The Final Doom manuals use the name as well. The game’s internal data uses the monster identifier MT_SPIDER and the sprite name SPID; these identifiers are not the same as an in-game proper name. The Doom Wiki uses spiderdemon as its primary article title while acknowledging the spider mastermind name.
Cultural significance
As the final boss of Doom (1993) and Thy Flesh Consumed, the spiderdemon is a climactic enemy in the classic games. Its reappearance as the final boss of Doom (2016) came 23 years after the original Doom was released in 1993.
For a broader look at the monsters encountered throughout the series, see the Doom enemies guide. The spiderdemon’s super chaingun is also part of the wider arsenal covered in the Doom weapons guide.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between 'spiderdemon' and 'spider mastermind'?
Both names refer to the same creature. The original Doom end text calls it the “spiderdemon,” while the manuals for The Ultimate Doom, Doom II, and Final Doom, as well as Doom II’s cast sequence, use the name spider mastermind. The Doom Wiki uses spiderdemon as the primary article title.
Is the spiderdemon the final boss of classic Doom?
It is the final boss of Doom’s third episode, Inferno, in E3M8: Dis, and the final boss of Thy Flesh Consumed in E4M8: Unto the Cruel. In Doom II, the final boss is the Icon of Sin.
What happens when the spider mastermind is defeated in Doom II RPG?
According to the Doom Wiki, when the spider mastermind is defeated in Doom II RPG, it breaks apart into three arachnotrons.
What is the spider mastermind's role in DOOM (2016)?
It is the game’s final boss, formed from Olivia Pierce’s body in union with the Lord of the Fourth Age of Hell after the portal to Hell is opened. The lore does not establish that Olivia deliberately controls the entity.
Can the spiderdemon be killed by the cyberdemon through infighting?
Yes. In Doom II’s MAP20: Gotcha!, the spiderdemon and cyberdemon can attack each other, and the cyberdemon usually wins.
How does the spiderdemon's gun work?
Its super chaingun uses the shotgun guy’s shotgun firing code and fires three pellets per shot at approximately 466.7 shots per minute. It continues firing until the target leaves its field of view or it is stunned.
Why is the BFG9000 effective against the spiderdemon?
Because its huge body catches most of the BFG’s tracer rays, and its blast immunity does not cover them. At point-blank range one or two shots can kill it.
Where else does the spiderdemon appear besides E3M8?
Besides E3M8: Dis in the original Doom, the spiderdemon appears in Thy Flesh Consumed in E4M8: Unto the Cruel, and in Doom II on MAP06: The Crusher (Ultra-Violence only), MAP20: Gotcha!, MAP23: Barrels o’ Fun (Hurt Me Plenty and higher), and MAP28: The Spirit World (two spiderdemons on Hurt Me Plenty and higher). It also appears in both Final Doom campaigns, Doom II RPG, and Doom (2016).
