Brutal Doom

The most famous gameplay mod for Doom — over-the-top gore and feedback.

Brutal Doom is a Doom gameplay mod by Sergeant Mark IV that exaggerates classic Doom’s combat: meatier weapon sound effects, dismemberment, enemy fatalities, alt-fire on every weapon, slow-motion executions. It runs on GZDoom and Zandronum, and is the entry point a lot of modern players have to the Doom modding scene.

Highlights

  • Reworked weapons — heavier sounds, alt-fire on every gun, scope on the pistol.
  • Gore system — dismemberment, decapitation, persistent blood and gibs.
  • Fatalities — slow-motion melee finishers when an enemy is at low health.
  • New enemies — Heavy Weapons Dudes, Armored Mancubi, others depending on the version.
  • Modular — most features can be toggled in the menu.

Install

  1. Install GZDoom first

Brutal Doom is a PWAD that runs on GZDoom (or Zandronum). Install GZDoom from its official source first.

  2. Get a Doom IWAD

You need a legal copy of Doom (DOOM.WAD), Doom II (DOOM2.WAD), or Freedoom (free, legal substitute).

  3. Download Brutal Doom

Get the latest version from ModDB (link above). It’s a single .pk3 file.

  4. Drag the .pk3 onto GZDoom

Drop the Brutal Doom .pk3 file onto gzdoom.exe (Windows) or pass it as an argument: gzdoom -iwad doom2.wad -file brutalv22.pk3.

Frequently asked questions

Is Brutal Doom canon Doom?

No. It's a fan-made gameplay overhaul, not endorsed by id Software. It changes how Doom plays — some classic-Doom purists consider it disrespectful, others love it. Try it and decide for yourself.

Does it work with Doom mapsets?

Mostly yes for vanilla-style PWADs. Brutal Doom changes how enemies behave, so it can break scripted custom maps that rely on specific enemy stats. Test it with the mapset you're playing.

Is there a Brutal Doom for Doom 3?

No. Brutal Doom is exclusively for classic Doom (1993) and Doom II — it loads in GZDoom/Zandronum, which only run the classic engine.

What's the difference between Brutal Doom and Project Brutality?

Project Brutality is a fork of Brutal Doom by a different team. It piles on more weapons, more enemies and more options. Brutal Doom is the lean original; Project Brutality is the kitchen-sink branch.
